Gouvia (8 km away from Corfu Town) is a fishing village with a long history. In 1537, was besieged unsuccessfully by the Turkish fleet, led by Barmarosa. Two centuries later, after a similar attempt, the Venetians fortified the port and they built there a naval port, whose ruins survive until today. The modern marina of the village serves more than 900 vessels.
