Easter in Corfu is the most majestic in Greece. Corfiots live with intensity the Divine Passion of Holy Week, and this intensity is reflected in local customs and traditions. For this reason, during Easter the Island is flooded with visitors. On Palm Sunday, the litany of Saint Spyridon takes place and the lodge is wandered , accompanied by the Philharmonic, along the streets of the city. On Good Friday it takes place the conduct of the Epitaph of Metropolis, which emerges from the cave at 10 pm in a pious atmosphere with purple color. At 6 in the morning of Holy Saturday, in Virgin Mary of Foreigners ,the faithfuls hit the pew in order to represent the earthquake that followed the resurrection of the Lord. At 11 in the morning,on the Upper Square, people throw from their windows, their boots or water pitchers so as to make a loud croton as the things that they throw hit the ground. In Pinta, the old commercial centre of city, the custom of 'mastelas' revives: a barrel with water is embelished and fills with coins by the passerbies. During the First Resurrection, somebody falls in and gathers the coins. The evening all are assembled in the Ano square where the divine procession takes place and multicoloured fireworks embelish the sky. On Tuesday of Easter ,is the day of 'mpasmata' or the repositioning of Saint Spyridon in the urn.
